The lack of ability
Vid första anblicken förefaller verken i The lack of ability vara en serie stilleben. Men de håller inte fast vid något levande utan återkallar snarare ett svunnet liv. De är ekon av något som inträffat. Love Dahlstedt iscensätter en dröm. Teckningarnas motiv verkar tillfälliga men utsnitten har drömmens urskiljning.
”Allt kan ske, allt är möjligt och sannolikt. Tid och rum existera icke; på en obetydlig verklighetsgrund spinner inbillningen ut och väver nya mönster: en blandning av minnen, upplevelser, fria påhitt, orimligheter och improvisationer.” Så skriver August Strindberg i den Erinran som fungerar som förord till Ett drömspel (1902).
Genom att använda drömmen som narrativ modell undgår författaren konventionens krav på logik och konsekvens. I drömmen finns inga hemligheter men inte heller någon moral. Det är också Love Dahlstedts utgångspunkt.
Upprepningen är ett tema i Strindbergs pjäs. The lack of ability kretsar kring samma tema. I pjäsen finns en scen där en vuxen man finner sig sittande vid skolbänken och upptäcker att han inte kan svara på den allra enklaste frågan: Vad är två gånger två?
”Två... gånger två... Låt mig se!... Det är två två!”
- Det är rysligt att en så stor gosse inte har ambitioner, säger magistern.
- Jag är ju fullvuxen, jag har ju slutat skolan, svarar mannen förtvivlad.
Det är den optimistiske förälskade officeren som förödmjukas på detta sätt, men alla utan undantag är drabbade. Den största besvikelsen drabbar dem som har störst förhoppningar. Författaren och tecknaren gör oss uppmärksamma på detta. Advokaten i pjäsen längtar efter jämlikhet, hans hustru efter skönhet, affischören efter sällhet, officeren efter kärlek. Liknande förhoppningar kan spåras i The lack of ability.

The lack of ability
At first glance the works in The lack of ability seem to be a series of still lifes. However, they are recalling a past life rather than holding on to anything living. They are echoes of past events. Love Dahlstedt reenacts a dream. The motives of the drawings seem temporary, but the sections have been selected with the judgment of dreams.
"Anything can happen, everything is possible and plausible. Time and space do not exist. Upon an insignificant background of real life events the imagination spins and weaves new patterns; a blend of memories, experiences, pure inventions, absurdities and improvisations."
The words are August Strindberg's, from the Reminder which serves as a preamble to A Dream Play (1902). By using the dream as a narrative model the author escapes from the customary demands for logic and consistency. In dreams there are no secrets, but there is also no morality. This is also the point of origin from which Love Dahlstedt departs.
Repetition is one of the themes of Strindberg's play, and The lack of ability also revolves around this theme. In one of the scenes of the play a grown man finds himself sitting at a school desk, realizing that he can't even answer the most simple question: What is two times two?
"Two... times two... Let me see!... It is two two!"
-It is terrible that such a big boy doesn't have ambitions, the teacher says.
-But I'm a full-grown man. I have left school, the man answers, in despair.
It is the optimistic officer in love who is humiliated in that way, but everyone, without exception, is subject to the same fate. Those who have the highest hopes are faced with the greatest disappointment. The author and the artist makes us aware of that.
The lawyer in A Dream Play longs for equality, his wife for beauty, the billsticker for bliss and the officer for love. Similar hopes can be detected in The lack of ability.
